Course Information Political and Legal Environment of Business For many businesses, non-market forces are as significant as market factors: Lawyers are frequently involved in developing and implementing strategies in the non-market environment to advocate and realize the interests their clients. This class introduces a set of analytic tools that rest upon a foundation of economic principles, political analysis, social psychology and risk management to help students identify patterns of behavior and outcomes in the non-market environment, methods of analysis that facilitate understanding and prediction, and, ultimately, the shaping of strategies to improve the non-market environment for clients. The course is organized through a series of case studies that identifies the ways in which firms are subjected to, and need to respond to, non-market forces and institutions including the media, activist campaigns, regulatory action and threats, and the legislative arena.

We have three main points of focus: These development projects are also research-driven, to create results about what works in legal innovation. As we experiment in legal innovation, we publish our process, our findings, and our finished products, to contribute to a wider knowledge base and community.

We also believe that technology, deployed within this design process, can improve legal services by increasing efficiency, resulting in higher quality interactions, and creating new value.

Tom currently supports the Corporate Legal Operations Consortium CLOCa non-profit group designed to establish standards and best practices within legal departments of all sizes around the world. She is working on access to justice innovation, with a focus on more coordinated Bay Area legal services.

Jane graduated from Stanford Law School in While a student, she worked as a student fellow in the Lab on how to design the courts to be more accessible to the public. Jane received a B. Prior to law school, she worked at a policy firm that improved the effectiveness of social service programs.

She came to law school with an interest in pursuing a public interest law career in health care and affordable housing.

Prior to coming to Stanford, Guillermo took part in several designing processes of both public and private initiatives. Inhe was involved in the design and implementation of a Clean Production Agreement in the Maipo river watershed in Chile, which was led by the Chilean government.

Through this agreement, water users in the Maipo river watershed committed themselves to implement cleaner and more sustainable methods of production. Also, in he guided a team of experts in the redesign of a water management system for a water user organization in Chile. By using a participatory and user-centered approach, Guillermo managed to make water allocation within the organization more efficient and effective.

During his fellowship, he also led workshops and classes around new business models, process mapping, logic and arguments, and design research methods brought to law.
